MEPHEDRONE CLASSIFIED IN APRIL
The Home Secretary classified mephedrone and the following chemicals and products containing them to be Class B on the 16th April:
· 4-Methylmethcathinone (mephedrone)
· 4-Methoxymethcathonone (bk-PMMAV/ mephedrone)
· 3- Fluoromethcathinone
· 2-Methylamino-1-(3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl) propan-1-one (bk-MDMA/methylone)
· 2-Methylamino-1-(3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl) butan –1-one (bk-MBDB/butylone)
Based upon expert evidence from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, mephedrone and other cathinone derivatives are considered sufficiently harmful to justify control under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. Anyone found carrying mephedrone or related cathinones could face up to five years imprisonment – while dealers could receive up to 14 years.
The Forum for Action on Substance Abuse based in Belfast, said that the number of people needing their help increased by almost 3000% between January and March 2010, compared to the same period last year. The organisation claims the rise reflects the increase in the use of mephedrone among teenagers.
