In 1902 Alex Stewart, grandfather of Stewarts’ current Senior Director Charles E Stewart, and great-grandfather of Charlie PW Stewart (Director) commenced practising in Newtownards. The practice was known as Alexander Stewart and provided legal services to the people of Newtownards and the surrounding rural hinterland for many years.
In 1940 Alex Stewart was succeeded by his son William C. Stewart who continued to practice under the name of Alex Stewart and Son until 1974, when the practice was in turn passed to his son, Charles E. Stewart.
In 1999, following a restructuring and rebranding, the practice commenced trading as a partnership under the name of Stewarts Solicitors. In 2008 Norman Scott who had practised for many years as Senior Partner in the firm known as F.J. Orr & Company joined Stewarts.
On the 2nd September 2013, Stewarts Solicitors became incorporated pursuant to the Solicitors’ (Incorporated Practice) Regulations 2007 (‘the Regulations’) of the Law Society of Northern Ireland.
In 2015 the firm expanded its reach in the North Down and Ards area by opening a full-time office in Holywood and, with John Campbell of Campbell Bates & Company Solicitors joining, the firm again has a presence in the town of Comber.
“Over the last 114 years our firm has developed from a small country practice into thriving province wide law firm with an experienced team of specialised solicitors and support staff.”
“We seek to adapt to meet all challenges and improve our service to clients. The new generation together with the experienced staff members many with over 20 years’ experience will strive to accomplish these aims.”
